Created for the Magic: The Gathering Shadowmoor set, Painter’s Servant is an iconic piece by celebrated fantasy and comic artist Mike Dringenberg. Released in 2008 by Wizards of the Coast, as part of the Shadowmoor block, Painter’s Servant has been the linchpin of numerous combo decks in Legacy and Vintage formats for years.

During the Magic: The Gathering art creation process, artists usually create a preliminary sketch of their idea for the direction of the artwork, and then forward this preliminary work to the art director of the project for approval. After the art director’s approval, the wheels are set in motion for the final artwork (traditional or digital) to be created. This preliminary artwork is a unique look in to what the artist originally envisioned for the piece, which sometimes changes before the final product takes shape. In this case you can see from the artist’s notes that the original working title for Painter’s Servant was “Beacon Scarecrow.” This lot for sale includes the set of both different perspective preliminary sketches for Painter’s Servant. One sheet measures 9 3/4 x 9 3/4, while the other measures 8 1/2 x 11.

Every piece of original artwork purchased from MTGKingpin includes a Certificate of Authenticity guaranteeing its authenticity and legitimacy as advertised. Most original artwork was purchased directly from the artist, and has a short chain of custody, and trackable provenance.
